The Evergreen Fresh broccoli sprouts Salmonella Bovismorbificans outbreak has ended, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The outbreak sickened at least 34 people in six states, an increase of two more patients since the last outbreak notice was issued on September 24, 2026.

The case count by state is: Idaho (1), Minnesota (1), Montana (4), Oregon (1), Utah (1), and Washington (26). The patient age range is from two to 87 years. Illness onset dates range from July 7, 2026 to September 11, 2026. Three people were hospitalized because they were so sick.

Epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback data show that broccoli sprouts produced by Evergreen Sprouts are contaminated with Salmonella bacteria and made people sick. State and local public health officials interviewed people about the foods they ate the week before they got sick. Of 30 people who were interviewed, 29 said they ate sprouts or microgreens, and 25, or 97%, reported eating broccoli sprouts. One person reported eating a microgreen mix containing broccoli microgreens.

That number is significantly higher than the 8.7% of respondents who reported eating any sprouts, including alfalfa sprouts, bean sprouts, and clover sprouts, in the FoodNet Population Survey over the same time period.

The PulseNet system is being used to find people who may be part of this outbreak. Whole genome sequencing performed on patient isolates showed that people in this outbreak got sick from eating the same food.

FDA and state traceback identified broccoli sprouts and microgreens grown from a contaminated seed lot imported from New Zealand as a source of illnesses in this outbreak. Officials in Montana collected an unopened package of broccoli sprouts from a patient’s home and found Salmonella. Whole genome sequencing showed it was the same strain of Salmonella Bovismorbificans in this outbreak. Officials in Washington also collected and tested samples of broccoli sprouts from a local food co-op and a patient’s home. Both tested positive for the same strain of Salmonella Bovismorbificans. FDA also collected and analyzed broccoli sprout seeds from the seed supplier; they also tested positive for the same strain of Salmonella.

Evergreen Sprouts recalled their broccoli sprouts on September 11, 2026. The seed supplier issued a recall of their Gardeners Basics Waltham 29 broccoli sprouting seeds on October 23, 2026 and contacted their customers. Eden Brothers Calabrese broccoli seeds were recalled on October 7, 2026. Home Grown green sprouting Calabrese broccoli seeds were recalled on October 2, 2026. Not all of these products made people sick in this outbreak.

If you purchased these seeds, do not eat them and do not use them for sprouting. You can return them to the place of purchase or throw them away. If you ate these seeds or sprouts made from them recently, monitor your health for the symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning for the next week. If you do get sick, see your doctor.
