Bitter Raw Apricot Seeds Recalled For Possible Cyanide Poisoning

Ecoideas Innovations is recalling Apricot Power brand Bitter Raw Apricot Seeds and Apricot Seed Meal because the natural toxin amygdalin present in those product may cause acute cyanide poisoning. The products have the wrong dosage information. There have not been any reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Bitter apricot kernels naturally contain the compound amygdalin, which can release cyanide in the human body when ingested. The body can detoxify small amounts of this compound, but high amounts can kill. Symptoms of acute exposure to high levels of cyanide can include dizziness, headache, confusion, weakness, difficulty breathing, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and seizures.

The recalled products are all Apricot Power Brand. The first is Bitter Raw Apricot Seeds in 454 gram packages. The code on the product is EXP 0121 and the UPC number is 7 280284 537130. Also recalled is Bitter Raw Apricot Seeds in 226 gram packages, with code EXP 0121. The UPC number for that product is 7 528303 370840. Finally, Apricot Seed Meal in 191.4 gram packages is recalled. The code on that product is 0218WF March 2020, and the UPC number is 7 280284 536904.

If you purchased any of these products, do not consume them. Throw them away after first putting the package into a container and sealing it. You can also take the product back to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is conducting a food safety investigation and may call for the recall of more products. And the government is making sure that industry is removing the recalled product from store shelves.
