Optimus Instant Hand Sanitizer Recalled For Undeclared Methanol

LIQ-E S.A. de C.V. is voluntarily recalling all lots and all bottle sizes of the Optimus Instant Hand Sanitizer because it may contain methanol, or wood alcohol, that is not declared on the label. Methanol is toxic or deadly if ingested, and it can be absorbed through the skin and cause health problems.

Substantial methanol exposure can cause nausea, vomiting, headache, and blurred vision. Serious health adverse effects of exposure to this chemical can include permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system, and death. Young children who accidentally drink these products and people who consume it as an alcohol substitute are most at risk. There have been no reports of adverse events related to these recalled products.

Each product contains a lot number consisting of a letter followed by a dash four digits (example L-1180). This number can be found on the master cartons and written in black pen on the 55 Gal blue drum and the 275 Gal plastic tank.

The individual bottles are labeled with a lot number and expiration date in this format: (L) 20-02 EXP 05/2022. See the table on the FDA page  for lot numbers of each individual bottle.

The recalled products are all Optimus Instant Hand Sanitizer. They include the product in 8.5 fluid ounce packages, with UPC number 7501799115621 and lot number and expiration date (L) 20-02 EXP 05/2022. The 55 gallon size is recalled, with UPC number 7501799118998 and several lot numbers that are printed on the FDA web site. The 1 gallon size is also recalled, with UPC number 7501799118837 and lot number and expiration date (L) 20-03 EXP 05/22. Finally, the 275 gallon size is recalled, with UPC number 7501799118981 and lot number and expiration date (L) 5200 EXP 05/2022.

The Optimus Instant Hand Sanitizer is distributed in a 55 gallon (208 L) plastic blue drum and in 8.5Fl ounce (250 mL), 1 gallon (3.78 L), and 275 gallon (1,040L) clear plastic HDPE bottles or tank. All are labeled with a green and white label. The product was sold throughout the United States.

If you purchased any of these products, do not use them. Throw them away according to your community’s hazardous waste disposal system or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

      I don’t think so. Still, if you are uncomfortable with this product, try to return it.
