Costco, Diamond Settle Salmonella Dog Food Class Action For $2M

Costco and Diamond Pet Foods Inc. have agreed to a $2 million settlement for illnesses linked to dog food contaminated with Salmonella.  Diamond manufactures dog food under a variety of brand names including: Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul, Country Value, Diamond, Diamond Naturals, Premium Edge; Professional, 4Health, Taste of the Wild, Apex, Kirkland Signature, and Canidae. The Kirkland Signature brand was sold at Costco stores.

Dog Food SafetyAfter the contamination was discovered in the spring of 2012, Diamond issued a massive recall. But for some, the recall came too late. Plaintiff Barbara Marciano said she purchased Kirkland Signature Nature’s Domain from a New York Costco store in April 2012. One of her dogs died, another became ill, a third had no symptoms.

Pet owners who handled the dog food also became sick. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a multi-state outbreak on April 2, 2012. Forty nine people in 20 states developed Salmonella infections. Ten of them required hospitalization. Pritzker Hageman, a national food safety law firm, represents an outbreak victim.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection include fever, headache, stomach and abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Infections that migrate from the digestive tract to the bloodstream can be life-threatening without prompt medical attention. Salmonella infections can also trigger long-term health problems such as reactive arthritis, inflammation of the heart, spine, tendons and eye membranes.

I am having a similar set of issues that appears to coming from Kirkland Puppy food. If anyone else is experiences are similar, please respond here so we can approach the manufacturer.

    • I am concerned that there is something wrong with my Kirkland Puppy food and the Kirkland large breed food in the Green bag. My dogs are obsessively drinking water, going out to urinate about every 20 mins around the clock, panting like crazy, loose stools and can’t seem to get comfortable. I think because there tummies hurt. They have only been fed Kirkland foods. No table scraps, no treats. My labs bowl has been sitting for 6 hours he is hungry but when he smells the bowl of food he just goes back and lays down. My Schnauzer has not eaten today and her tummy is bloated. These symptoms started within 2 days of opening this bag of food and are progressively getting worse, every time they eat. I’m going to try a new food tomorrow and see if the symptoms go away. I have a feeling they will.
