Gaspésien Ham Recalled in Canada for Possible Listeria Monocytogenes

Les Cuisines Gaspésiennes de Matane Ltée. is recalling Gaspésien brand ham products because it may be contaminated with Listeria mnocytogenes bacteria. No reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products have been received to date.

The ham was sold nationally at the retail level. The recalled products are all Gaspésien brand. they include Handmade Le P’tit Picnic – Boneless Smoked Pork Shoulder in 1.5 kg packages. The UPC number is 0 68553 10049 3 and the codes on the product are BB/MA 2018-MA-20 and BB/MA 2018-MA-24. Also recalled is Handmade Old Fashioned Smoked Ham in variable weight sizes. There is no UPC number, and the codes on the product are BB/MA 2018-MA-18 and BB/MA 2018-MA-24. Finally, Le P’tit Classique Smoked Ham in 750 gram packages is recalled, with UPC number 0 68553 10042 4 and codes BB/MA 2018-MA-19, BB/MA 2018-MA-23, and BB/MA 2018-MA-24.

If you purchased any of these products, don’t eat them. Put them into a sealed or double bagged package in a secure garbage can, or take them back to the store where you purchased them for a full refund.

Clean out your refrigerator or freezer where the ham was stored with a solution of 1 tablespoon liquid chlorine bleach to one gallon of warm water. Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures, and freezing doesn’t kill it.

If you ate any of this ham, it’s important to watch yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include persistent fever, much aches, severe headache, neck stiffness, and nausea. Pregnant women may only have a mild illness that seems like the flu, but listeriosis can cause premature labor, miscarriage, and stillbirth. If you do start to feel ill, see your doctor.
