The recall of Jewel Osco Signature Farms salad for cyclospora contamination has been updated because the facility code in the original recall notice was incorrect. That code was “S5417”, but it is actually “S5424.” The salad was made by Fresh Express at their facility in Streamwood, Illinois.
There is a multistate cyclospora outbreak potentially linked to this product and several other salads, all produced by Fresh Express, that were sold in states around the country. The states with illnesses are Iowa (74), Illinois (57), Kansas (1), Minnesota (25), Missouri (10), Nebraska (20), North Dakota (6), and Wisconsin (13). Those numbers are current as of June 29, 2020 and may change soon. At least 23 people are hospitalized because they are so sick.
The recalled Jewel Osco Signature Farms Garden Salad was sold in Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa. It has the UPC number 21130 98135 and was sold in 12 ounce plastic bags in the produce section in supermarkets in those states. The recalled salads have best if used by dates of May 16, 200 through July 4, 2020. The best if used by date and product code are printed on the top right corner of the front of the package.
Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite that causes infection when ingested in food or water. Symptoms of cyclosporiasis include fatigue, weight loss, gas, bloating, loss of appetite, fever, stomach cramps, abdominal pain, and diarrhea that is watery and explosive. This illness can last for weeks or months if not treated.
And if the patient is allergic to sulfa drugs, there is no really effective treatment for this infection. If you have been ill with these symptoms, see your doctor.
If you purchased this salad or any other recalled salads related to this outbreak, do not eat it. Throw it away in a sealed container in a secure garbage can with a tight fitting lid, or take it back to the store where you purchased it for a full refund. Wash your hands well with soap and water after handling this product.
