Northwest Naturals raw pet food is being recalled for possible Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes contamination. No illnesses have been reported to the company to date in connection with this issue. The recalling firm is Northwest Naturals of Portland, Oregon.
Both pets and people can be infected with contaminated pet food. Pets infected with these pathogens may be lethargic and have bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Pets that appear healthy can be carriers and infect other animals or people. People can get sick when they touch the fur of an animal who has excreted the pathogen in their feces, or by touching the food or anything where the animal has been, then touching their mouths or eating without washing their hands first.
The voluntarily recalled Northwest Naturals raw Pet food was sold in retail stores nationwide. The products are Northwest Naturals Frozen Chicken Recipe, which is a cat food and protein topper for dogs. It is packaged in 2 pound bags with lot number B-5. The best by date is January 26, 2028. And the UPC number stamped on the product label is 087316384956.
Also recalled is Northwest Naturals Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe, which is packaged in 6 pound bags. The lot number for this item is B-19, and the best by date is January 25, 2028. The recall was triggered when product samples were collected and teated by the fDA. The Northwest Naturals Frozen Chicken Recipe tested positive for Salmonella, and the Northwest Naturals Frozen Raw Diet For Dogs Chicken Recipe teated positive for both Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella.
If you purchased this food, do not feed it to your pet. You can throw it away in a secure trash can after first double bagging it so other people can’t see it and animals can’t access it, or you can take it back to the store where you bought it for a full refund. Clean pet food bowls, any utensils used on the products, and surfaces in your home after you discard the food.
Then monitor your pet’s health and your family’s health for the symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning for the next week, and listeriosis for the next 70 days. If anyone gets sick, see your veterinarian or doctor.
