Wegmans Yellowfin Tuna is being recalled for high scombrotoxin levels. Scombrotoxin fish poisoning is caused by eating fish that have high levels of histamine, which triggers an allergic reaction. Fish develop high histamine levels when the flesh has not been properly refrigerated or preserved and it begins to spoil.
Symptoms of scombrotoxin fish poisoning develop within a few minutes to an hour after eating mishandled and decomposed fish. They include headache, heart palpitations, flushing of the face, itching, blurred vision, cramps, and diarrhea. Most people get better within 12 hours, and antihistamines can help, but some people do become ill enough to be hospitalized. The recall notice did not state whether or not any illnesses have been reported to the company.
These products were sold only at the Ocean, New Jersey; Mount Laurel, New Jersey; Norwalk, Connecticut; Princeton, New Jersey, and Woodbridge, New Jersey locations. No pictures of the recalled products were provided in the recall notice.
The recalled products include Wegmans Yellowfin Tuna Steaks packaged in 1 pound packages. The UPC number stamped on the product label is 2-06644-XXXXX-4. The recalled tuna was sold between July 18, 2026 to July 25, 2026. Also recalled is Yellowfin Tuna Steak, packaged in 1 pound containers, with UPC number 2-66644-XXXXX-8. That item was also sold between July 18, 2026 to July 25, 2026. Finally, FYFGA Yellowfin Tuna Medallions, packaged in 1 pound containers, is included in this recall. The UPC number for that item is 2-06839-XXXXX-0. Any of that product sold between July 18, 2026 and July 25, 2026 is recalled.
If you bought any of these items, do not eat them. If you froze them for later use, they are not safe to eat. You can throw the fish away in a secure trash can with a tight fitting lid after first double bagging it, or you can take it back to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.
