Lots of Norovirus Going Around in Indiana

A norovirus outbreak in Hartford City, Indiana has been traced to a Subway restaurant, with more than 90 people ill. Earlier this week, there was a gastroenteritis outbreak supposedly caused by norovirus and linked to Jimmy John’s restaurant in Valparaiso, Indiana. Since November, there have been 11 confirmed outbreaks of norovirus in the state.

The Indiana Board of Health investigated after the sheriff’s department began getting calls about people becoming ill. The restaurant closed on January 10 and re-opened on Friday, January 13. A registered environmental health specialist with the county health department said, “We are confident that the local food establishment has properly addressed the situation.”

The outbreak was traced to a human being. Norovirus is usually transmitted when sick people prepare food for others. Most norovirus outbreaks occur in the winter months when people spend more time indoors and more people are ill. It’s commonly known as the “stomach flu”, with sudden onset of vomiting and diarrhea.
