Wheeling, Illinois Norovirus Outbreak Sickens 146

Tests results have confirmed that 146 people who contracted food poisoning after eating at Bob Chinn’s Crab House in Wheeling, Illniois are sick from norovirus. No source for the virus has been pinpointed, but if you visited the restaurant before Thursday and have leftovers, authorities recommend you toss them.

The restaurant, which says it is the fourth busiest in the country, voluntarily closed on Wednesday after several customers got sick. They sanitized the restaurant and were allowed to reopen.

Norovirus may be the cause, but whether the source of the virus is Bob Chinn’s restaurant hasn’t been determined.

This time of year gastrointestinal illness is common, since so many people remain indoors and the virus is so contagious. In fact, norovirus is one of the seven pathogens that cause 90% of foodborne illness in the United States.

Symptoms of the illness include chills, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. There is no treatment and most people recover fully, but some require hospitalization and 200 people die every year, mostly the elderly.
