Finger Lakes Farmstead Cheese Recalls Gouda for Possible Listeria

Finger Lakes Farmstead Cheese Company of Trumansburg, NY is recalling 12 wheels of Gouda cheese because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. No illnesses have been reported to date.

The cheese may be called “SCHUYLER” or “BIER MECK” GOUDA and was distributed in New York state, mostly in the Albany region. it was sold to retail stores and restaurants. The label on the product states the product name and company name. The products were sold to the distributor Adventure in Food Trading on March 26, 2013. The cheese was made on December 20, 2012.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and fatal infections in the very young, elderly people, frail persons, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. The symptoms of listeriosis can take as long as 70 days to appear. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Pregnant women may have only very mild symptoms similar to the flu, but Listeria can cause stillbirth and miscarriages.
