Slade Gorton Co., Inc. and Giant Eagle Inc. Recall Breaded Tilapia Products for Undeclared Milk

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) reports that Slade Gorton Co., Inc., based in Boston, MA, has recalled three brands of its tilapia products because the breadcrumbs they are breaded in may contain undeclared milk. This recall has prompted a similar recall by Giant Eagle, Inc. of the breaded tilapia store brands it sells to its customers.

Slade Gorton Co.’s recall was issued after Newly Weds Foods, Inc., its breading vendor, notified the company on June 6, 2017, that it had erroneously supplied three product codes and five purchase orders of pre-dust and breading that might contain the milk allergen. Newly Weds Foods had previously issued a recall to its other customers on May 10, 2017.

The three Slade Gorton Co. products affected by the recall are: “GOURMET BAY TOASTED CRUMB TILAPIA” (product code: 7396701), “GOURMET BAY HONEY MUSTARD TILAPIA” (product code: 7324801), and “GOURMET BAY CITRUS COCONUT TILAPIA” (product code: 7322401). Manufactured between January 31, 2017 and June 6, 2017, these brands were distributed to Bfresh, Cantanese Classic Seafoods, Euro USA, The Fish Guys, Harris Teeter, Porky Products, Superior Fish Company, and Supervalu stores in the states of Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. The tilapia was sold via full-service or self-service seafood cases.

Slade Gorton’s recall has led to a consequential recall by Giant Eagle, Inc. of its “MARKET DISTRICT TOASTED CRUMB TILPIA” (PLU: 09123; available in stores from March 10 through June 9, 2017) and its “GIANT EAGLE TOASTED CRUMB TILAPIA” (PLU: 69123; available in stores from March 10 through June 9, 2017).

People who are allergic to milk should not eat these products, since they may trigger a life-threatening reaction. They should dispose of the products or return them to their place of purchase for a refund.
