Furikake Popcorn Sold in Hawaii Recalled For Undeclared Fish

Samurai Inc. of Honolulu, Hawaii is voluntarily recalling 16,660 packages of Furikake Popcorn because it may contain fish, one of the major food allergens. Anyone who is allergic to fish, also known as fin fish to distinguish it from shellfish, who eats this product could have a serious allergic reaction. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recalled item.

The recalled popcorn was sold in the state of Hawaii and can be bought in all retail chains across the state. The Furikake Popcorn is packaged in 5 ounce bags. It has the Best By dates 103019, 111519, 113019 and 121519 marked on the back panel of the package. No UPC number for the product is mentioned in the recall notice.

The recall was initiated after the company discovered that product containing fish was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of the allergen. The problem was apparently caused by a breakdown in the company’s Food Safety Allergen Control Program.

If you purchased this product and cannot eat fish, do not eat it. Throw it away or give it away or take it back to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Symptoms of a food allergy can range from mild to serious. Mild, early reactions may include tingling of the mouth, lips, and tongue, and itching. More serious reactions can include swelling of the mouth, lips, and tongue, hives, swelling of the throat, difficulty breathing, and abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should see a doctor.
