Country Breakfast Sausage Recalled for Undeclared MSG

The London Meat Company of New York, New York is recalling about 200 pounds of country breakfast sausage because it contains monosodium glutamate (MSG) not listed as an ingredient on the product label.

Product details:

  • Milano’s Country Breakfast Sausage
  • 5 pound boxes
  • 80 sausages in each box
  • Each box has the establishment number “EST. 8777” inside the USDA mark of inspection
  • Products made-to-order for restaurants and caterers in New York City through February 21, 2012

A routine inspection by the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) discovered the problem. The MSG was added to the product when the company changed seasoning blends but didn’t update the label.

There have been no reports of adverse reactions or illness in connection with the consumption of this product. MSG can cause a reaction in those sensitive to the ingredient. This is a Class III recall: a situation where the use of the product will not cause adverse health consequences.
