Meat Company Executives Charged with Selling Adulterated Chicken

Two executives of Hitchin’ Post Steak Company in Kansas City, Kansas, General Manager Craig Cunningham and Vice President Jason Cunningham, were indicted today on charges that they sold adulterated and misbranded poultry products.

U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom has listed these charges:

  • Craig Cunningham has been charged with one count each of conspiracy to transport and sell adulterated and misbranded food items.
  • Both have been charged with one count of selling and transporting adulterated poultry products from Kansas to Oklahoma and Minnesota.
  • Both have been charged with one count each of unlawfully using an official mark of inspection on adulterated poultry products without the authorization of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)

GavelThe crimes allegedly took place from March 2008 to December 2008 in Kansas City, Kansas. Approximately 400,000 pounds of poultry products are involved in the indictment. The law defines adulterated food as “unsound, unhealthful, unwholesome or otherwise unfit for human food”, or food processed or prepared under unsanitary conditions.

The crimes carry penalties of one to five years in federal prison and fines up to $250,000. It’s interesting that in 2009 the company’s largest unsecured creditor was Tyson Foods, which has been involved in many recalls and food poisoning outbreaks.

  1. Isn’t this the owner of the Big Splash Car Wash? These people are scandalous!!! They operate a car wash in Overland Park, KS. They got off the charges for adultering our food. Thank God they aren’t in the food business any more, but I would not want to fill this man’s pocket book.
