Romaine Lettuce Recall for Possible E. coli 0157:H7 Expands into U.S.

The Canadian recall of Tanimura & Antle Romaine lettuce for possible E. coli 0157:H7 contamination has expanded into the U.S. A total of 2,095 cases were shipped. More than 1,900 cases were shipped to nineteen states in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. The cases hold either 12 or 18 heads of lettuce per case.

The lettuce is individually packed in plastic bags with UPC number 0 27918 20314 9. The traceability code label on the exterior of the case is 5417802151. It may have a Best-By date of August 19, 2012. The lettuce was sold at retail outlets from August 2, 2012 through August 19, 2012. These states received the lettuce: AL, AR, AZ, CA, GA, KS, KY, MD, NC, NM, NV, NY, NJ, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WA and Puerto Rico.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) conducted a random test on the lettuce and discovered the bacteria. There have been no illnesses associated with the consumption of this product. This bacteria causes a serious illness with bloody diarrhea. Some people develop hemolytic uremic syndrome after an E. coli 0157:H7 infection, which can cause kidney failure and death.
