Pacific Organic Produce of San Francisco is recalling a limited number of cases of organic mangos because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. They were sold under the Purity Organic brand. No illnesses have been reported to date, but Listeria can take a long time to develop. A Salmonella outbreak linked to imported mangoes sickened 127 people in 2012.
The recalled product is Tommy Atkins mangoes sold under the Purity Organic brand name. They were for sale between April 14, 2014 and May 2, 2014. A single sample in an FDA test yielded a positive result for the bacteria. The mangos have PLU numbers 94051 and 94959. They were shipped to retailers and distributors in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Jersey, and Texas. Only those specific PLU numbers are recalled.
If you purchased this product, do not eat it. Discard in a closed container or return to the place of purchase for a refund.
If you ate these mangos, you need to monitor yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis, the illness caused by the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, for 70 days after you ate the fruit. Those symptoms include fever, nausea, diarrhea, muscle aches, stiff neck, and headache. Pregnant women may have just a mild illness, but listeriosis can cause miscarriage or stillbirth. The average onset of illness after exposure to the bacteria is about three weeks. If you do get sick, please see your doctor immediately and tell her you consumed this recalled product. Listeriosis can be treated with antibiotics and is best diagnosed at an early stage.
