Golden Dipt® Jalapeño Breader Product Recalled for Potential E. Coli

Kerry Inc., a food manufacturer based in Beloit, Wisconsin, has issued a recall for two lots of its Golden Dipt® Jalapeño Breader product, according to a news release issued today by the FDA. Kerry Inc. initiated the recall after it was notified by a supplier that two of the ingredients used in the product, a jalapeno nugget and a red bell pepper nugget, had been produced using flour from General Mills that was possibly contaminated with E.coil 0121.

The two lot codes of Golden Dipt® Jalapeño Breader that have been recalled are found on the product’s white, 10-pound bag, with UPC number 763089721548 and Item Number G5620.690. The two affected lot numbers, printed along the bottom of the product label, are: 0414647003 and 0513647003. Complete product photos may be accessed here.

This current product recall arises in connection with the recall by General Mills of its Gold Medal flour following an outbreak of E.coli 0121 that sickened thirty-eight people across 20 states. Although no E.coli bacteria has been found in the Gold Medal flour product itself, at the General Mills facility, or in their flour mill, epidemiological evidence suggested the flour as a possible source of the outbreak.

Symptoms of E.coli food poisoning include severe stomach and abdominal cramps, bloody or watery diarrhea, nausea, and mild fever. If ignored or improperly treated, an E. coli infection can develop into hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can cause kidney failure and death. The FDA requests that anyone diagnosed by a physician with E. coli 0121 should contact state and local public health authorities.

If you find one of the two affected lot codes on a package of Golden Dipt® Jalapeño Breader, you should dispose of the product and seek reimbursement from the store / distribution group where it was purchased. Kerry Inc. has set up a hotline for questions at 800-325-3383 between the hours of 8 am to 5 pm CST.
