Nodine’s Smokehouse Recalls Smoked Salmon for Possible Listeria Monocytogenes Contamination

Nodine’s Smokehouse of Connecticut is recalling Smoked Salmon in 1.5 pound and 8 ounce packages. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The Smoked Salmon was distributed nationwide in retail stores and through mail order. The 1.5 pound product has lot number 40173 and the 8 ounce package size has lot number 33173. The recall was initiated as a result of environmental and product sampling by the Rachael’s Food Corporation. Distribution of these products has been suspended while an investigation is conducted.

If you bought these products, do not eat them. Throw them away in a sealed or double packaged bag in a secure garbage can, or take them back to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Then you should clean out your refrigerator with a mild bleach solution to kill any remaining bacteria. Use a combination of 1 tablespoon liquid chlorine bleach to one gallon of warm water. Wash your hands well with soap and water after you clean and after handling the packages of this product.

If you ate these products, watch yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days, because that’s how long it can take for these symptoms of appear. Symptoms include severe headache, high fever, stiff neck, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. This illness can be fatal in rare instances. Pregnant women need to be especially careful about this pathogenic bacteria, since listeriosis can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature labor, and infection in the newborn baby. A pregnant woman may only have mild symptoms similar to the flu. If you do feel ill, see your doctor.
