Smoked Salmon Flakes Recalled in Canada for Listeria

True North Salmon Co. is recalling their Toppers Smoked Salmon Flakes from the marketplace for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this issue.

The recalled product is True North Seafood Company Toppers Smoked Salmon Flakes seasoned with lemon and dill in 113 gram containers. The UPC number on the product isĀ 0 60719 72255 6 and the code on the product is 7838. All best before dates up to and including November 17, 2017 are part of this recall. This product was sold in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and possibly sold nationally at the retail level.

If you purchased this product, do not use it. Throw it away in a sealed or double bagged package, or take it back to the place of purchase for a refund. Wash your hands well with soap and water after handling this product.

You should then clean out your refrigerator, freezers, drawers, pantry, cupboards, or wherever you stored this product with a solution of 1 tablespoon liquid chlorine bleach to 1 gallon of warm water. Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can persist wherever it is introduced, and can be difficult to eradicate. The bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures, and freezing does not kill it.

If you ate this product, watch yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. That’s how long it can take for symptoms to appear. Symptoms include high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, diarrhea, and nausea. Pregnant women may only have a mild illness that appears to be the flu, but listeriosis can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, and premature labor. If you do feel sick, see your doctor.
