Sawler Turnip Sticks Recalled for Listeria Monocytogenes in Canada

Sawler Gardens is recalling Sawler Turnip Sticks from the marketplace in Canada for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The product was sold in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and may have been distributed in other territories. No illnesses have ben reported to date in connection with this problem.

The recalled product is Sawler Turnip Sticks in 340 gram containers. The code on the product is 18 FE 18 and the UPC number is 6 21063 36600 3.

If you bought this product, don’t eat it, even if you are going to cook it. Cross-contamination can occur between contaminated foods and other foods and kitchen surfaces. Throw it away in a sealed or double bagged package, or take it back to the place of purchase for a full refund.

It’s a good idea to then clean out your refrigerator or wherever you stored the product with a solution of 1 tablespoon liquid chlorine bleach to one gallon of warm water. Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures and freezing doesn’t kill it. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling this product and cleaning.

If you ate this recalled product, even if it was cooked, watch yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days, because that’s how long it can take for this illness to manifest. Symptoms include high fever, stiff neck, vomiting, nausea, muscle aches, severe headache, and diarrhea. Pregnant women can suffer miscarriage, premature birth, or stillbirth if they contract this infection, even though they may only feel mildly sick with what appears to be the flu. If you do get sick, see your doctor and tell him you ate this recalled product.
