All People’s Food of New Castle, Delaware, is recalling about 3,902 pounds of smoked whole chicken because it contains monosodium glutamate (MSG) that is not declared on the label. MSG can cause adverse reactions in some people who are allergic to that ingredient. No adverse reactions have been reported to date.
Monosodium glutamate is a flavor enhancer that is often added to processed meats, Chinese food, soups, and canned vegetables. It is on the “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) list, but it must be listed on the label. Some people say they have “MSG symptom complex” and get headaches, sweating, flushed face, numbness and tingling in the face and neck, heart palpitations, chest pain, nausea, and weakness when exposed to the chemical. There is no definitive link between MSG and those symptoms.
The recalled product is 32 pound bulk boxes with plastic lining containing 155 pieces of “All Peoples Food Smoked Whole Chicken.” The product has the establishment number “P-46802” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The problem was discovered on October 23, 2018 by state inspection personnel.
FSIS doesn’t expect adverse reactions from this recall issue. But anyone who is concerned about an illness should contact their doctor.
If you have purchased this product and are affected by MSG, don’t eat it. Throw it away or take it back to the place of purchase for a refund. FSIS is conducting recall effectiveness checks to make sure that the firm is recalling the item, and making sure the product is no longer available to consumers.
