The Warwick Stop and Shop is issuing a consumer alert on deli sliced meat and cheese for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination, according to the Rhode Island Department of Health. All deli sliced meats and cheese that was sold at that facility between January 18 and February 2, 2018 is recalled.
Anyone who bought deli sliced meat and cheese at this particular store between that time period should discard those products and bring their receipts to the Stop & Shop for full refunds. The deli is temporarily closed while it is being cleaned; the rest of the store is open.
The notice is dated February 4, 2018. There have been no confirmed illnesses that are associated with this problem to date.
If you purchased deli sliced meats and cheeses from that Stop and Shop in Warwick, Rhode Island during that time period, do not eat it, even if you are going to cook it. Throw it away in a sealed container so other people and animals can’t get at it.
Then clean out your refrigerator using a solution of one tablespoon liquid chlorine bleach to one gallon of warm water. Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures. Freezing doesn’t kill this pathogenic bacteria. Wash your hands well with soap and water after handling these products and after cleaning.
If you ate any of those products, watch yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. Those symptoms can include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea, muscle aches, and diarrhea. Pregnant women can suffer miscarriages and stillbirth even though they are only mildly sick. If you do get sick, see your doctor.
