Albek de Mexico SA de CV is voluntarily recalling all lots and al brands of Nuuxsan hand sanitizer and other brands it makes that are distributed in the United States because methanol was found when the products were presented for import. No reports of serious adverse events related to the use of these products have been received by the company to date. The hand sanitizers were distributed nationwide in the United States starting on November 15, 2019.
The brands the company makes are Nuuxsan hand sanitizer, Modesa, Assured, and Next. All lots of Nuuxsan Instant Hand Sanitizer, sold in 8 ounce plastic bottles with UPC number 713620000175 are recalled. Modsesa Hand Sanitizer with Moisturizers and Aloe Vera is recalled, also packaged in 8 ounce plastic bottles, with UPC number 32251380426 and lot number 1931104AL.
Assured Hand Sanitizer Vitamin E. and Aloe in 8 ounce bottles with UPC number 639277928597 and lot number 1931101AL is recalled, along with Assured Hand Sanitizer Aloe Vera, packaged in 8 ounce plastic bottles with UPC number 639277928610 and lot number 1931102AL. Finally, Next Hand Sanitizer in 8 ounce plastic bottles with UPC number 650240053573 is recalled, with lot numbers ending with 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, and 1005. Exposure to methanol can cause diarrhea, vomiting, severe abdominal pain, headache, and blurred vision. The wood alcohol can be absorbed through the skin. If the product is consumed, it and cause permanent blindness, coma, nervous system damage, or death.
If you bought any of these products, stop using them immediately. Dispose of them through your community’s hazardous waste disposal system, or take them back to the store where you bought them for a full refund.
