There are soft cheeses recalled in Canada for a possible Listeria monocytogenes outbreak. The cheeses, which are produced under two brand names: Le Fromage au Village and La Vache à Maillotte, are implicated but further lab testing is going on to confirm the link, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
The cheeses were sold in Ontario and Quebec at the retail level. They have also been sold online and may have been sold in other provinces and territories.
The recalled products include La Vache à Maillotte Mélo-Dieux – Surface-ripened soft cheese that is packaged in about 275 gram containers. There is no UPC number on the product. The codes are R594, R602, and R613. Also recalled is Le Fromage au Village Angelus – Soft surface ripened cheese, that is packaged in about 200 gram packages. The UPC number for this product is 6 73536 02012 7. The codes stamped on the label are R603, R604, R607, R611, R614, R617, R619, and R622.
Also recalled is Le forage au Village Le Casimir – Soft surface ripened cheese that is packed in approximately 200 gram containers. There is no UPC number for this item. The code on the label is R608. Finally, Le Fromage au Village Le Cendré de Notre-Dame – Semi-soft surface-ripened cheese is recalled. It is packaged in about 150 gram containers. There is no UPC number for this item, and the codes on the label are R605, R606, R610, R612, R618, R621, and R623.
If you bought any of these cheeses, do not eat them. You can throw them away in a secure garbage can after first double bagging them, or you can take them back to the store where you purchased them for a full refund. You can see pictures of the recalled cheeses at the CFIA web site.
If you ate any of these cheeses, monitor yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. If you do feel sick, call your doctor.
