Cheerleading Competition in Everett Spawns Outbreak of Intestinal Illness

A cheerleading competition in Everett, Washington, attended by some 4,000 observers and participants spawned an outbreak of intestinal illness now under investigation by the State Department of Health and the Snohomish Health District. More than 200 people fell ill.

A press release from health offices in Olympia said the cause of the illnesses was Norovirus. Teams and supporters from around the state participated at Everett’s Comcast Arena in the event, hosted February 4 by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA).

Food illness symptoms of nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea began the next day and the day after.

“The investigation is in the early stages and includes sending a questionnaire to participants as well as collecting samples for testing at the state Public Health Laboratories,” the state press release said. “People who attended the event and have severe symptoms are advised to contact a health care provider.”

The WIAA said officials from Comcast Arena are cooperating with investigators.
