Feed for Horses Recalled

Western Feed, LLC is voluntarily recalling two lots of horse feed because it may contain the medication monensin sodium (Rumensin). Some horses have died as a result of eating this product.

Initial testing by a private lab found the presence of Rumensin in two lots. Rumensin can be fatal to horses if fed at high levels.

Retailers have been told to remove this product from their stores.

Product details:

  • Kountry Buffet 14% feed
  • Packaged in 50 pound bags bearing the Payback logo
  • Attached tag identifying the product as Kountry Buffet 14%
  • Lot numbers M718430 and M720280 are found near the bottom of the tag, below the Feeding Directions
  • Feed was distributed December 2, 2011 through December 15, 2011

The symptoms of toxicity can vary with the amount consumed. Trace amounts of Rumensin may cause a horse to lose appetite and show signs of colic. Horses that consume larger amounts will show more serious symptoms in a few hours, including sweating, stiffness, lack of coordination, and the inability to stand.
