Listeria Concern Prompts Recall Of Knott’s Chicken Salad Sandwiches

Knott’s Fine Foods, Inc. of Paris, Tenn. is recalling its 3 ounce chicken salad sandwiches for possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. No illnesses have been reported to date in with this problem.

All chicken salad sandwiches with expiration date of 1/29/13  and earlier are being recalled. They were distributed in 35 retail stores in West Tennessee, Western Kentucky and North Mississippi.

The product is sold in a 3 ounce black plastic wedge container with a clear plastic film closure. The UPC number  is 0-11984-01132-6. All expiration dates 1/29/13 and earlier are being recalled. The expiration date is located on an orange sticker on the clear film of the package.

The problem was discovered during routine testing by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture which found the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in one of the sandwiches. No other Knott’s Foods products are included in the recall. The company has temporarily halted production of the sandwiches while it works with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the investigation.

Listeria can cause serious, sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Symptoms  of an infection, called listeriosis, can take up to two months after exposure to develop and include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeriosis can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
