Outbreak at Bloomingdale High School in Florida

The Florida Department of Health is warning that an outbreak has occurred at Bloomingdales High School in Valrico, Florida. Those who are ill are suffering from vomiting, stomach ache, nausea, fever, and diarrhea. There is no word on whether or not officials have discovered what has caused this illness.

Child Food PoisoningThis type of illness can be caused by norovirus, or it could be a symptom of a bacteria infection. Norovirus spreads through institutions such as schools, hospitals, and nursing homes quickly, especially when bad weather keeps people inside. Students were sent home sick yesterday. The school is closed for the holiday today.

The school requests that if your child is sick, they not return to school until they have been completely free of symptoms for 24 hours. Tell the school if your child is sick and take him or her to the doctor. Ask for a stool test for norovirus or other illnesses.

To prevent the spread of this and other illnesses, always wash your hands after you use the bathroom or change a diaper. Wash your hands with soap and running water before preparing food or serving it, and before eating. Stay home and away from other when you are sick, especially if you have diarrhea. And see your doctor if you do not get better within a few days. Ask for stool samples to check for an infection or food borne illness.
