San Danielle Mortadella Recalled in Canada for Listeria

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Lady York Foods are recalling San Danielle Mortadella meat because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. No illnesses have been reported to date, but listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria, can take up to 70 days to appear.

The recalled product is San Danielle Spicy Mortadella sliced and sold from the deli counter at Lady York Foods at 2939 Dufferin Street in North York, Ontario on February 18, 2015 but labelled as “San Daniella Mortadella – Regular or Lean.” It was sold in variable weight sizes with variable UPC numbers. The meat is a product of Italy. The code on the product is “PACKED ON 2015.FEB.18.” Since the product was mislabeled, check with the store to see if you purchased this recalled product. You can see pictures of the recalled products at the CFIA web site.

If you did buy it, discard or return to the place of purchase for a refund. Then wash your hands and clean out your refrigerator with a mild bleach solution, since Listeria bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures.

If you ate this product, watch yourself of the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. They include vomiting, nausea, fever, muscle aches, headache, and neck stiffness. Pregnant women may suffer miscarriage or stillbirth but only be mildly ill. If you do get sick, see your doctor and tell her you ate this recalled product.
