A Class II recall has been issued by Ruiz Food Products, Inc. for 23,544 pounds of its “Ranchero Cooked Beef & Cheese Wrapped in a Battered Flour Tortilla” product. As reported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), multiple consumers of this product alerted the manufacturer to instances of their finding brittle clear plastic foreign matter in the tortilla products. Ruiz Food Products, Inc. is headquartered in Denison, Texas.
The beef and cheese tortillas, produced on November 18, 2016, were distributed in 4.5-lb. cases (containing 24 pieces each) to distributors and stores in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin. These cases were marked with a production date of “16 323” as well as a product code of “86-390.”
The recalled tortillas can be identified by locating an establishment number of “EST. 17523A” inside the USDA mark of inspection printed on the label. Products with this number should either be returned to their place of purchase or disposed of in the trash.
A “Class II” USDA recall signifies “a health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.” To date, no cases of illness have been reported as arising from the potentially contaminated beef and cheese tortilla products.
