Bravo Produce of San Isidro is recalling Maradol papayas grown by Productores y Exportadores de Carica Papaya de Tecomán y Costa Alegre SPR of RL and packed by Frutas Selectas de Tijuana, S. de RL de CV, because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. Other papayas imported from Mexico have been linked to a deadly Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 201 people.
The papayas were sold in California from August 10 to 29, 2017. The papayas are labeled on the packing crates as Frutas Selectas de Tijuana, S. de R.L. of C.V. It is important to clarify that Frutas Selectas de Tijuana, S. de R.L. of C.V. Unfortunately, the consumer rarely sees the packing crate. The FDA found Salmonella on a papaya that wasn’t introduced into commerce.
If you aren’t sure whether or not you bought these papayas, ask your retailer. The FDA will not be releasing information about the retailers who stocked this fruit.
If you purchased imported Maradol papayas, ask your retailer if he stocked these fruits. If so, discard the fruit in a sealed container or take it back to the store for a full refund. Wash your hands after handling the fruit, and clean out your refrigerator or wherever it was stored with a mild bleach solution to kill any remaining bacteria.
