More Butter Recalled in Canada for Possible Listeria

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has updated the recall issued on July 5, 2017 for butter that was recalled for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this issue.

The recalled products include Perron brand butter in 454 gram packages. The code on the product is 143 069 and the UPC number is 7 72622 72454 0. The second recalled product is Beurre du Lac butter in 454 gram packages. The code on that product is 143 032 and the UPC number is 0 62260 00455 6.

If you purchased these products, do not use them. Throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Then clean out your refrigerator or freezer or wherever the butter was stored with a mild bleach solution. Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can grow at temperatures below 40°F and freezing doesn’t kill it.

If you ate these products, watch yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, nausea, and diarrhea. Pregnant women may only have a mild illness similar to the flu, but listeriosis can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature labor, and infection in the newborn. If you do feel sick, see your doctor.
