Recall of Dog Rawhide Chew Products Expands

United Pet Group is voluntarily expanding its recall of multiple brands of packages of rawhide dog chew products to include private label brands. A recall issued earlier in June included the brands of American Beefhide, Digest-eeze, and Healthy Hide (including Healthy Hide – Good -n- Fun and Healthy Hide – Good -n- Fit).

Some of the company’s rawhide chew manufacturing facilities in Mexico and Columbia, and suppliers in Brazil, were using a quaternary ammonium compound mixture as a processing aide. This compound is not approved in the U.S. as an aid in the production of rawhide chews for dogs.

There have been reports of pet illness. Most customers complained that the recalled products have an unpleasant odor. Exposure to quaternary ammonium compounds in dogs may cause reduced appetite and gastric irritation, including diarrhea and vomiting. These symptoms may require treatment by a veterinarian depending on severity.

You can see the list of recalled products along with the lot codes and expiration dates at the FDA web site. The private labels include Companion, Dentley’s, Enzadent or Dentahex, Essential Everyday, Exer-Hides, Good Lovin’ or Petco, Hill County Fare, and Priority Pet. The recall is limited to dog chew products that contain rawhide.

If you bought these products, do not give them to your dog. Throw them away in a sealed container or take them back to the store where you bought them for a full refund.
