Coconut Tree Shredded Coconut Recalled in Canada for Possible Salmonella

Three recall notices have been posted on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency website about recalls of Coconut Tree shredded coconut for possible Salmonella contamination. This product is linked to a Salmonella outbreak in the United States. No illnesses have been reported to date in Canada in association with this product.

The first recall notice was posted January 24, 2017; the recalling companies are Hen Long Market Oriental Food Co. Ltd., Thai United Food Trading Ltd., and Three Dolphins Wholesale.  All packages sold up to and including that date are recalled. Green Field Frozen Shredded Young Coconut in 227 gram packages with UPC number 7 12190 99714 4 is recalled. Captain’s Choice Shredded Coconut in 454 gram packages, with UPC number 8 934791 920105 is recalled. Captain’s Choice Shredded Young Coconut in 227 gram packages with UPC number 8 934791 920112 is recalled. And finally, Coconut Tree Shredded Young Coconut in 227 gram packages with UPC number 7 79139 06522 7 is recalled. Those products were distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and possibly nationally.

The second recall notice is for Coconut Tree Shredded Young Coconut in 227 gram packages. The code on the product is 2019-08-01, and the UPC number is 7 79139 06522 7. That product was sold in Ontario at the retail level.

Finally, the third recall notice is for Coconut Tree Shredded Young Coconut in 227 gram packages. The code on that product is 2019-07-01, and the UPC number is 7 79139 06522 7. That product was sold in Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec.

If you purchased those products, do not eat them. Throw them away in a sealed or double bagged package and put in a secure garbage can, or take the product back to the place of purchase for a full refund.

The Salmonella outbreak in the United States has sickened at least 25 people in nine states as of January 17, 2017. Six people have been hospitalized because their illnesses are so severe. Traceback evidence indicates that Coconut Tree brand Frozen Shredded Coconut is the likely source of this outbreak. The two bacteria causing those illnesses are Salmonella Newport and Salmonella I 4,[5],12:b:-.
