Gusto and Olli Molisana Salami and Pepperoni Products Recalled for Possible Listeria Monocytogenes Contamination

Olli Salumeria Americana of California is recalling about 3,946 pounds of ready-to-eat salami and pepperoni products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this issue.

These products were sold nationwide in the United States and were also exported to Canada. The problem was discovered when the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) performed routine testing on the products.

The not heat treated, shelf stable, ready-to-eat meat products were packaged on January 19, 2018. The recalled products include: 6 ounce packages of “Gusto NAPOLI APPLEWOOD-SMOKED SALAME” with lot code 1000012821; 6 ounce packages of “Gusto CHORIZO SMOKED PAPRIKA” with lot code 1000012812.; 6 ounce packages of “Gusto SOPRESSATA BLACK PEPPERCORN SALAME” with lot code 1000012811; and 6 ounce packages of “Gusto TOSCANO FENNEL POLLEN SALAME” with lot code 1000012805; and 6 ounce packages of “Gusto PEPPERONI CLASSICALLY AMERICAN” with lot code 1000012804. Also recalled are 175 gram packages of “OLLI MOLISANA PEPPER + GARLIC SALAMI” with lot code 1000012808.; 175 gram packages of “OLLI NAPOLI APPLEWOOD-SMOKED SALAMI” with lot code 1000012810; and 175 gram packages of “OLLI CALABRESE SPICY SALAMI” with lot code 1000012807. These products all have the establishment number “M-45334” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

If you purchased any of these products, do not eat them. You can see pictures of the recalled product labels at the USDA web site. Discard them in a double wrapped or bagged package, or take them back to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Then clean out your pantry or fridge or freezer with a mild bleach solution so any remaining bacteria are destroyed. Use a solution of one tablespoon liquid chlorine bleach to one gallon of warm water. Wash your hands well with soap and water after cleaning and after handling these products.

If you ate any of these products, monitor yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. Symptoms of this illness include high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, muscle aches, and diarrhea. Pregnant women can suffer miscarriage, premature labor, and stillbirth if they contract this illness, even though their illness is mild and similar to the flu. If you do get sick, see your doctor.
