Hy Vee is recalling six of its meat and potato products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella bacteria. The products contain caramelized mushrooms and fire-roasted tomatoes produced by McCain Foods. No illnesses have been reported yet.
There are several other recalls of foods that are contaminated with those pathogens. It is unusual for products to be contaminated with more than one kind of bacteria. We don’t know if McCain Foods supplied ingredients to the companies who have posted the other recalls, but it’s possible.
The recalled products are Hy-Vee Bacon Wrapped Cowgirl Chicken Grillers that are 8 ounces each with UPC number 023092600000; Hy-Vee Fire Roasted Tomato, Spinach, Mozzarella Twice Baked Potato in 5 ounce packages with
UPC number 023755400000; and Hy-Vee Cowgirl Chicken Griller Patty that are 6 ounces each with UPC number 023100200000. Also recalled are Hy-Vee Gourmet Steakhouse Mushroom & Swiss Burger that are 6 ounces each with
UPC number 023168400000; Hy-Vee Ground Beef Sliders Mushroom & Swiss in 2 ounce packages with UPC number 023164300000; and Hy Vee Ground Beef Sliders Mushroom & Swiss in 12 count, 30 ounce packages, with UPC number 023266600000. These products all have the best by date of October 22, 2018 or earlier.
If you bought these Hy Vee products, don’t eat them, even if you are going to heat them first. Discard them in a secure garbage can, or take them back to the place of purchase for a refund. These products were sold in all eight states where there are Hy Vee stores.
If you ate these products, watch yourself for symptoms of food poisoning. Salmonella food poisoning symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea that can be bloody. Listeriosis, which can begin up to 70 days after infection, causes high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, and diarrhea. Pregnant women must take this infection seriously, because it can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, and premature labor. If you do get sick, see your doctor.
