Beef Jerky and Daisho Kimchi Soup Base Recalled for Undeclared Allergens

Two foods have been recalled today by the FDA and USDA for undeclared allergens. One is recalled for undeclared milk, the other for undeclared shellfish.

First, Whip City Jerky is recalling beef jerky products because they contain milk, one of the major food allergens, that is not declared on the label. These items were produced between December 18, 2017 and January 31, 2018. No illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported to date in connection with these problems.

You can see the long list of recalled products at the FDA web site, along with best when used by dates and package sizes. They include WhipCity Jerky Hawaiian Beef Jerky, Jalapeño Beef Jerky, BBQ Beef Jerky, Mesquite Beef Jerky, and Buffalo Beef Jerky, among others. The products have the establishment number “EST. 00948M” inside the USDA mark of inspection. They were shipped to retail stores in Massachusetts and Connecticut and also sold over the internet and through catalogs.

JFC International has issued an allergy alert on Daisho Kimchi Hot Pot Soup Base because it contains undeclared shrimp and crab, which are shellfish, one of the major food allergens. There has been one allergic reaction reported.

The product was distributed between October 1, 2016 and January 31, 2018 to retail stores and foodservice operators in AK, AZ, CA, CT, DC, DE, HI, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, MI, MO, NE, NH, NJ, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI. The recalled product is Daisho Kimchi Hot Pot Soup Base in 1.80 pound packages. The barcode on the product is 49 04621 04221 9. All lot codes are recalled.

The product is packaged in a red aluminum pouch. The lot code is found to the left of the barcode. The recall was initiated a consumer notified the company about an allergic reaction.

If you purchased these products and are allergic to the allergen in question, don’t eat them. Throw them away or take them back to the place of purchase for a full refund.
