Raw whole milk from Fertile Valley Farm in Honesdale, Wayne County, Pennsylvania is being recalled because it tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, according to a notice positive by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Tests completed after a routine inspection and sampling were positive for the pathogen.
The milk that is recalled was sold between February 21 and March 1, 2018. It was sold directly from the farm in plastic gallon, half gallon, and quart containers with the Fertile Valley Farm label. The farm has discarded all of the remaining milk and has posted a note to its customers about this issue on social media.
No illnesses have been reported to date, but listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria, can take up to 70 days to manifest. The symptoms of listeriosis include high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, nausea, diarrhea, and muscle aches. Pregnant women may only be mildly ill with what seems like the flu, but listeriosis can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature labor, and infection in the newborn. Children under the age of 5 are also at high risk for complications with this type of infection.
If you purchased this product, do not drink it. Throw it away in a sealed contained in a secure garbage can so other people can’t get at it, or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
You should clean your refrigerator or freezer with a mild bleach solution to kill any remaining bacteria. Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures, and freezing doesn’t kill it. Use a mild bleach solution to wipe down the shelves and inner walls, and clean all packages. Then rinse with clear water and dry.
If you consumed this milk, you need to watch yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. If you do get sick, see your doctor and tell her that you consumed this milk.
