Smokehouse Pet Products is recalling all sizes and all package types of pet treats labeled “Beefy Munchies” because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. That company recalled a limited amount of that product on February 9, 2018 and that recall has been expanded.
The product was distributed nationwide through distributors selling to different retailers. The product comes in individual bags, resealable bags, and plastic tubs. The plastic tub is labeled “Beefy Bites.” All sizes and types of packaging will include a UPC number, lot number, and a best if used by date stamped on the back.
No illnesses, pet or human, have been reported to date in connection with this problem. The Colorado Department of Agriculture found the pathogenic bacteria in two 4-ounce packages of “Beefy Munchies.”
Pets who have been infected with Salmonella can be lethargic and have diarrhea that may be bloody, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may only have a lesser appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. And other pets can be infected but show no symptoms. Unfortunately, all of these pets with these symptoms, or no symptoms at all, can infect other pets or people. Animals shed the bacteria in their feces and it can then be transmitted in many ways.
Humans with Salmonella infections may have these symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea that may be bloody, abdominal cramps and pains, and fever. Salmonella infections can cause serious complications, including arterial infections, endocarditis, reactive arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract problems.
If you bought this product, do not give it to your pet. Throw it away in a sealed or double bagged package to prevent other pets from accessing it, or take ti back to the store where you bought it for a full refund. Wash your hands well with soap and water after handling it.
If your pet starts exhibiting symptoms of illness, see your veterinarian. It’s a good idea to thoroughly clean and sanitize your home after you get rid of this product.
