Superior Foods Company in Kentwood, Michigan is recalling 487 pounds of Smoked Salmon Spreads that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall.
Listeria monocytogenes was identified through routine inspection and testing by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. The products were distributed in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Minnesota. They were sold in retail grocery stores and some food service businesses.
The recalled products include Smoked Salmon Spreads in 5 pound bulk units. The code number is 68487, the sell by date is 4/25/18, the lot number is 0728-2 and the UPC number is 043823684873. Also recalled is Simply Superior Smoked Salmon Spread in 6 x 5 ounce units, with code number 92379, sell by date 4/25/18, lot number 0728-2, and UPC number 043823923798. Finally, Morey’s Smoked Salmon Spread is recalled, sold in 6 x 6 ounce units. The code number is 92503, the sell by date is 4/25/2018, the lot number is 0728-2, and the UPC number is 043823925037.
If you purchased any of these products, don’t eat them. Throw them away after sealing the package in a double wrap or bag, or take them back to the store where you bought them for a full refund. No other Superior Foods Company retail or food service-branded products are affected by this recall.
You should then clean out your refrigerator or freezer with a solution of 1 gallon warm water and 1 tablespoon liquid chlorine bleach, to make sure that any bacteria are destroyed. Wash your hands well with soap and water after cleaning and after handling these products.
If you ate these products, watch yourself for listeriosis symptoms for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Pregnant women can suffer miscarriages and stillbirths if they contract this infection, even if they think they only have the flu. If you do get sick, see your doctor.
