Dogs with Salmonella infections may show signs of illness or they may not. Pets who do not seem sick can be carries of pathogenic bacteria. The symptoms of a Salmonella infection in a dog includes lethargy, diarrhea that may be bloody, fever, and vomiting. Some animals may only have a decreased appetite and abdominal pain. The bacteria is excreted in the feces and then can then get onto the dog’s paws or coat. That is how it can be passed to humans.
Human symptoms of a Salmonella infection include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea that can be bloody, abdominal pains and cramps, and fever. Children, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses are more likely to have serious complications with this type of infection.
If you or your pet is exhibiting these symptoms, see your doctor and take your pet to the vet. No illnesses have been reported in connection with this problem.
