Sandwiches Recalled in Canada For Possible Listeria Monocytogenes

Three recalls have been issued in Canada for sandwiches that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. The brands are Deli Chef, ONroute, A Bis Gourmet, Timothy’s, and Quality Fast Food. The foodborne illness outbreak associated with frozen diced chicken triggered these recalls, but no illnesses have been associated with these specific products. Some facilities may have received these products and repackaged them under different names. You can see pictures of product labels at the CFIA web site.

The first recall is for Deli Chef chicken salad, egg salad, ham salad, and roast turkey sandwiches. You can see the package sizes, UPC numbers, and product codes at the CFIA web site. The sandwiches were distributed in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Possibly National, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec at the retail level.

The second recall is for ONroute, A Bis Gourmet, and Timothy’s products, which include Chicken Salad Wedge Sandwich, Chicken Salad Italian Bun, Chicken Salad Rolled Pita, Chicken Salad, and Madras Chicken Salad. Again, no confirmed illnesses have been associated with these particular products. See the recall notice for details about these recalled products. These products were sold in Ontario at the retail level.

Finally, the third recall is for quality Fast Foods sandwiches, including Deli Chicken Salad Sandwich White, Deli Roast Beef & Cheese Sandwich White and Deli Egg Salad Sandwich White. No illnesses have been reported in connection with these products. These products were distributed nationally at the retail level.

Symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes food poisoning can include high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Pregnant women may be most severely affected by this infection, since listeriosis can cause miscarriage and stillbirth, but the illness is usually mild. If you think you ate any of these products and have been ill, see your doctor.
