Corned Beef Products Recalled in Canada For Possible Listeria

Save on Foods is recalling corned beef products in Canada for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. These products were sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Yukon at the retail level. No illnesses have been reported to the company or the government to date in connection with these recalled items.

The recalled items include Save on Foods brand Corned Beef. It was sold by clerks at the deli country in variable sizes. The UPC number on the product starts with 298230, and the code on the beef is Packed on 2019.SE.25 to 2019.OC.10 inclusively. Also recalled is Save on Foods brand Corned Beef & Swiss Cheese Sandwich, sold by individual units. The UPC number on that product starts with 281300, and the codes are Packed on 2019.SE.25 to 2019.OC.10 inclusively.

This recall was triggered by a consumer complaint. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation which may lead to the recall of more products. Government is verifying that the company is removing the recalled products from the marketplace.

If you purchased these products, do not eat them, even if you plan to reheat them or cook them first. Throw them away in a sealed package, or take them back to the store where you purchased them for a refund.

You should then clean out your refrigerator or freezer with a mild bleach solution, since Listeria monocytogenes bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures. Wash your hands well with soap and water after cleaning and after handling these products.

If you ate any of these products, monitor yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. Symptoms can include high fever, muscle aches, stiff neck, severe headache, nausea, and diarrhea. Pregnant women may think they have the flu if they contract this infection, but listeriosis can cause miscarriage and stillbirth. If you feel ill, see your doctor.
