Cantaloupe Safety Press Conference

Members of the media are barred from the Center for Produce Safety’s (CPS) invitation-only meeting this afternoon about cantaloupe food safety, but can learn the findings during a Jan. 12 conference call hosted by CPS and the Produce Marketing Association.

Last year, a Listeria outbreak linked to cantaloupe grown on a Colorado farm sickened 146 and killed 30 people.

During today’s meeting, in San Diego, attendees will discuss objectives for the cantaloupe industry regarding food safety guidance, standards and technologies.

Tomorrow, Stephen Patricio, president of Westside Produce and chair of the Center for Produce Safety Advisory Board; Dr. Bob Whitaker, chief science and technology officer for Produce Marketing Association and chair of the Center for Produce Safety Technical Committee; and Bonnie Fernandez-Fenaroli, executive director of the Center for Produce Safety will share a recap of the meeting and provide a roadmap for the future of cantaloupe safety in the U.S.

The January 12 event is a Webex conference call scheduled for 4 p.m. EST/1 p.m. PST.
