Cherry Tomatoes Recalled for Salmonella in US and Canada

The FDA is recalling 840 cartons of Mexican Rio Queen Citrus cherry tomatoes in “Karol” brand boxes because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. The tomatoes were sold through retail stores in Texas and South Carolina. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of this product.

Recall SignageThe product was originally distributed in a bulk container of 12/1 Dry Pints in boxes labeled “Karol” with the Lot No. “01W45” stamped in the upper right hand corner on the box. The box states “Distributed by Interstate Fruit & Vegetable”, which is an affiliated business of Rio Queen Citrus, Inc. The product was sold between November 10 and November 19, 2012. The tomatoes may have been repackagted depending on the retailer.

In Canada, the CFIA is warning consumers not to consume Krown cherry tomatoes and store-made party trays containing cherry tomatoes sold at Safeway stores. No illnesses have been reported with these products. The cherry tomatoes are in 551 ml containers with UPC number 0 33383 65520 8, sold from November 13 to 21, 2012, inclusive.

The party trays were sold at Safeway stores in various sizes, with various UPC numbers, sold from November 14 to November 21, inclusive. The products were distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, North West Territories and Yukon and may have been distributed nationally.
