Family Cow Cleared to Sell Raw Milk Again: Cases Rise to 43

The Pennsyvania Department of Agriculture cleared Shankstead Ecofarm to start sales of raw milk again, after an outbreak of Campylobacter that was associated with unpasteurized milk from that farm. The case count has grown to 43 sickened people from the 38 reported last Friday.

The inspection was conducted late Monday afternoon, February 6, 2012. Tests on the raw milk removed from the farm last month have not yet been released by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Last week, the Maryland Health Department found Campylobacter in unopened cartons of raw milk removed from the farm in January.

The case distribution is as follows:

  • Pennsylvania (36)
  • Maryland (4)
  • Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia (2)
  • New Jersey (1)

About half of the ill persons are under the age of 18. The owners have written a statement of apology, stating that the outbreak has “made them sick at heart and spirit.”
