Krasnyi Oktyabr in New York is recalling fish for possible botulism contamination. The fish was not properly eviscerated. The product is Beer Set Dried Rudd; you can see product labels at the FDA site. The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors discovered the problem during a routine inspection.
Clostridium botulinum is a tasteless, odorless, colorless bacteria that forms spores. Those spores can grow in an anerobic environment, such as the vacuum packaging of this recalled product, and produce botulism poison, which can be deadly. Symptoms of botulism food poisoning include blurred or double vision, general weakness, poor reflexes, difficulty swallowing, and respiratory paralysis.
The recalled fish comes in a vacuum packed 7 ounce (200 gram) bag with a code Best Before 10.22.12. It was sold to one retail store in New York City on June 14, 2012.
