New Jersey Has Seven Confirmed Cases of Salmonella; 2 Hospitalized

Daniel Emmer, Communications Manager of the New Jersey Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS), told Food Poisoning Bulletin that there are seven confirmed cases of Salmonella Bareilly in that state.

HospitalTwo of the cases required hospitalization. Five of the patients are males and two are female. The age range is from 7 to 46 years. The department has determined that exposure took place in Bergen, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Union counties.

Mr. Emmer said that no definitive food source has been identified. The New Jersey DHSS is working with local health departments to determine a common link among the cases.

“We are aware of media reports that contaminated sushi may be a cause of this outbreak and we are looking into that possibility,” he stated. “At this point in our investigation, we can only say that some of the New Jersey cases did report eating sushi.”
