Almost 300 people on two different Celebrity cruise ships were sickened during their voyages with symptoms that included diarrhea and vomiting.
At least 174 passengers and 11 crew members on board the Celebrity Silhouette which sailed January 29 and returns today and 95 passengers and 12 crew members aboard the Celebrity Constellation which sailed January 28 and returns February 11 were stricken by the same illness while at sea, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
In response to the outbreaks, Celebrity notified passengers and encouraged case reporting, increased cleaning and disinfection procedures and collected stool specimens from ill passengers and crew for diagnostic laboratory testing after returning to port.
CDC Vessel Sanitation Program environmental health officers will board the ships on arrival to conduct a targeted environmental health assessment and evaluate the outbreak and response activities.
